Kuleshov Effect

Image
The Kuleshov Effect The Kuleshov effect is a film editing effect demonstrated by soviet film maker lev Kuleshov in the 1910s and 1920s. It is the idea in which viewers derive more meaning from the interaction of two shots than from a single shot by itself. After watching this video explaining the effect, we created our own series of Kuleshov effects.  If we had time we could have filmed another reaction to follow a different set of shots.  We could have also made sure that the eyeline of the individual matched where they were supposedly looking.

Midpoint exam coursework - 'The Wait'

Image
'The Wait' For our midpoint we were given a stimulus for our short film. Mine was ; three friends waiting. I decided that the genre of my film would be horror. I created tension  through the few moments where their friend has stopped talking on the phone.  What I really like about this short film was the use of a cyclical structure; its started and finished with a shot of the house with birdsong. This gave it the effect that nothing seemed to had changed. the rest of the world hasn't notice what just took place, so the world just carries on.  A way in which I could have improved the short film would have been to work on the sound. because it was a windy day the dialogue was a little hard to hear. I could have fixed this by re-receding the audio inside.  To make the film more intersesting I could have had a few shots of their friend inside the house on the phone, so it would add to the effect of the film starting off seemingly normal. It would also then invol...

Camera Shots and Angles video

Image
After watching a video on shots and angles, I created my own. Having this knowledge of how to film the different camera angles, will help me in filming in the future. By having a variety of different angles in my videos it will help to make them more interesting for the viewer.  There were a few angles that I didn't manage to film, such as a canted angle shot, or a medium shot. At some point in the future I could have a go at filming these shots.

Bus Stop Monatge Video

Image
We had a task to film a montage of someone waiting for a bus. We did this to experiment with montages and try out filming and editing our first one. I added in a  song in the background to add to add to the comical effect.  This montage could be improved by using a larger variety of cinematography. I could do this with shots such as high and low angled shots, or a tracking shot. Montage: a series of short clips put together to condense time.

Using Mise-en-scene to create genre stills

Image
Using Mise-en-scene we created six stills of different genres. We did this in order to understand what different aspects of Mise-en-scene go into each different genre of film. We also did it so that we could look out for these in the future and can easily know the genre of a film.  Teen We used character expression and movement to express the anger the character is feeling.  We also used the setting of a school and set of school lockers, theses are often associated with Teen films as it is a setting where teens spend most of their life. Romance For Romance we used character expression and  proxemics  to clearly show the affection between the two characters. We also used the setting of a fairly sunny day, giving the feeling of them being content and comfortable in the situation.  Horror By having the character in the middle of the shot, it breaks the rule of three and  is very unusual, thus making ...

Group Horror film openeing task- Final Video

Image
As a class we produced a opening scene for a horror film. After auditioning people to take part, and finding a setting, this is what our final video came out as. Strengths of our film opening are the interesting and unique shots we got from using a drone to film. Also the suspenseful piece of instrumental music we use to accompany the film is very effective, as it keeps the audience on edge and creates tension. To improve this video we could have had less narration and more dialogue. the narration is very cliché and takes away from the horror of the situation.  We could have also had the more modern part of the story in colour so it is easier for the audience to distinguish between the different time periods.
